Why Monitor your Blood Test when you have Diabetes

It is important that you control your blood glucose levels because having too high sugar levels for a long time increases the risk of diabetes related complications such as;

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and Academy of Medicine Malaysia recommend the following target blood glucose levels for adults with Type 2 diabetes.  However, around 76% of diabetic patients still HAVE PROBLEMS keeping good control.

Type 2 Diabetes Target

  • Fasting Before Meals 4.4 – 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after Meal below 8.5 mmol/l
  • HbA1c less than 6.5% (for young healthy patients with low risk of hypoglycemia)
  • HbA1c between 6.6 – 7% (for all other patients)
  • HbA1c between 7.1 – 8% (for patients with heart disease or prone to hypoglycaemia)

Although the list of diabetes complications may look scary. The risk is minimized IF you keep good blood glucose control and measure your blood regularly.  Even small improvements can make a big difference if you are motivated to change to a healthier lifestyle and eat better. 

Discuss your Diabetes Treatment Plan with your Pharmacist, Doctor or Diabetic Educator. Get your diabetes blood test EVERY 3-4 months to ensure your diabetes is UNDER GOOD CONTROL
