How often do I need to check my blood sugar?
Keeping good sugar control has been shown to
- improve your energy levels and well being
- reduce the risk of hypoglycaemia episodes
- reduce risk of diabetic related complications such as blindness, kidney failure , stroke or foot amputation
Target Value for Type 2 Diabetes (ask your doctor for your own individual target)
- HbA1c less than 6.5%
- Fasting sugar between 4.4-7 mmol/l
- 2 hours after meal less than 8.5 mmol/l

Simple tips to help manage your diabetes control
1. When you first wake up, you should take a reading. This is called the fasting reading. After eating a meal, (try to make this a typical meal that you would eat), the reading is called post-prandial reading.
2. Other readings you can take include 15 minutes before your meal and just before bedtime.
3. Your doctor will advise you on the number of reading you should take. The frequency of readings depends on whether you;
- are taking insulin (usually require more readings)
- have large reading fluctuations
- have frequent hypoglycaemic episodes
- have good control based on your HbA1c reading
- have diabetes related complications
4. Try to take some 2 hour post-prandial readings once a week in addition to your fasting morning reading to ensure your meal composition is well-balanced
