DOCTOR IN THE SPOTLIGHT: DR. TEO JED YEOW

Ever wondered what’s it like to be an expert in Aesthetics? Today, I talk to Dr. Jed Yeow, the specialist in the department with over 8 years of experience. He currently runs Pure Touch Clinic at Bangsar South and owns a Laser Centre at Damansara Heights. Here are his answers to 18 questions asked!

1) Tell me about yourself

I am of Taiwanese and Malaysian descent, grew up in Garden International School and always wanted to be a doctor, as I loved helping my friends, enjoyed the sciences and scored good grades. Upon graduating from high school, I got accepted into a medical university in Moscow, Russia where I received a lot of hands-on training.

Passed and graduated from medical school at the early age of 23 with flying colours, returned home to Malaysia and started my housemanship. Not long after, I went to Australia to pursue a postgraduate degree in General Medicine.

2) What are your hobbies?

I enjoy going to the gym, playing basketball, badminton and keeping myself fit by watching my diet and consistently load up on good supplements to stay healthy. Also, I’m going to be a father soon, so it looks like I will be spending a lot of time doting on my new child.

3) Why did you choose to become a doctor?

Partly because my parents encouraged me to be a doctor when I was younger, but as I grew older, I realised that I enjoyed helping people, and essentially, that is what a doctor does.

4) Where did you study?

  • MD (Moscow)
  • AMC (AUS)
  • SAAARMM (Member of The Society for Anti-Ageing, Aesthetic and Regenerative Medicine Malaysia)
  • KCCS (Member of Korean College of Cosmetic Surgery)
  • Member of Allergan Medical Institute for Supporting Excellence in Facial Aesthetics

5) Why Aesthetics instead of Plastic Surgery?

To undergo the knife, you will endure a lot of pain, suffer from bad bruising, end up bedridden and recovery time is long. You can say goodbye to eating, talking and laughing for a while.

However, with Aesthetics, the procedure is quick and recovery time is short, and I like the idea of that.

6) The Aesthetics trend is beginning to pick up. Did you foresee this trend back in the day?

Yes, I saw this day coming… which is why, I decided to pursue this specialty. Technology is so advanced nowadays, you can have a facelift without actually having to go under the knife (it is also one of my best specialties).

7) What sets you apart from the rest of the doctors/aestheticians?

I would say, I make an effort to spend longer periods of time with each patient. I’m extra careful and I try to work a bit slower because I’m OCD when it comes to the things that I do. Ensuring proper follow up and maintaining quality after-care is my forte.

For instance, let’s talk about how a laser treatment works. For a complete laser treatment, it requires 5 layers in one setting:

  • First layer – Carbon peel
  • Second layer – Toning
  • Third layer – Lifting
  • Fourth layer – Rejuvenation of the eyes
  • Fifth layer – Pigmentation

Many doctors would require their patients to select two out of the five layers at a cheaper rate, and to add on, they’d just need to pay more. But I don’t work that way because I want to ensure that my patients experience the full treatment from end-to-end at one fixed price.

8) Is this your dream job?

Absolutely yes. I’m good with my hands and fingers! I focus on minute details and try my best to make it less painful and more comfortable for my patients. And the best part is, having patients return to thank and love you for what you do! Satisfaction at it’s best. It isn’t about the money anymore.

9) What is the one adjective your patients will use to describe you? And why?

They’d say I’m very careful and attentive, because I make the effort to ensure they’re doing well, during and post-procedure.

10) What is your best specialty?

I specialise in Facial Aesthetics. Anything related to nose augmentation, face slimming, hair growth, facelift… I’ve got it covered.

11) Describe your most successful accomplishment

I recently had this one 67 year old patient whom I treated. She took care of her husband for many years because he’s a stroke patient, and just last year, he passed away. She was feeling absolutely dejected, but wanted a change in her life. I gave her a facelift treatment last year in June, and she looked absolutely incredible after recovery. But more than just the physical, the change gave her life and confidence. She even started seeing someone!

12) How do you react under pressure?

Because I’m a little OCD, sometimes I get agitated when I’m under pressure. I constantly stress myself because I want the outcome to be perfect. However, I have to say I manage it pretty well.

13) If you had to name one, what is your weakness?

I’m a perfectionist! I am constantly thinking about ways and methods I can use to fix things until I get it right. Sometimes, it can cause anxiety and affect my sleep.

14) Have you had any unhappy patients in the past, and what did you do to resolve it?

Yes I have had unhappy patients, though not many. It’s important to take the time to speak with them, explain processes and details as well as manage their expectations. I can’t promise rainbows and butterflies, but I can ensure quality. Patience whilst communicating is key.

15) Tell us about the story of how Pure Touch Clinic came to be?

Essentially, I’d like to think Pure Touch defines me. It’s not just about Aesthetics, but more about the experience. Feeling a doctor’s pure touch, the way we communicate and how we build relationships.

In terms of the business, a doctor friend of mine, Datuk Dr. Tan Ming Lee and I decided to collaborate to start Pure Touch Clinic.

16) What is the one thing that makes you want to get up in the morning to go to work?

The anticipation to see my patients’ recovery and improvement! I don’t treat my job as work, as I can stay in my clinic till late… to do admin work, consult existing patients etc. My wife who is a Pharmacist helps me at my clinic at night.

17) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would definitely like to rank as the top 10 Aesthetic practitioner in Malaysia. Now, we have two Pure Touch clinics, one in KL and the other in Bangsar South. We’ll see where this takes me!

18) What are some of the popular services you offer?

  • Wrinkle Removal
  • Acne Scar Treatment
  • Hair Regeneration
  • V-shape Face Slimming
  • Facelift
  • Thread Lift
  • Nose Augmentation
  • Chin Augmentation
  • Double Chin Removal
  • Eyebag Removal
